Michael Haaren, EditorDear Reader,

Welcome to the January 3, 2008, edition of the “Rat Race Rebellion Telework Bulletin.”

Happy New Year! This year -- you’ll doubtless be pleased to know -- is (cue the trumpets) The Year of The Rat! (More on that below.)

This week’s issue also brings you expert tips on how to work from home as a Desktop Publisher, a note on the tax status of workers at virtual call centers, and some resources for “Frugal and Simple Living” (our newest section).

Jobs include lawyers, freelance researchers and writers, IT folks, accountants, bloggers, customer service representatives, and an online organizer for a moms group.

Rebelliously Yours,

Michael

Michael D. Haaren, Editor-in-Chief
The Rat Race Rebellion Telework Bulletin

P.S. - Until next week’s issue, you’ll find more screened job leads every day at Rat Race Rebellion.com, at http://www.ratracerebellion.com/job_postings.htm . The jobs listed in this Bulletin are withheld from the website for a full week, to give readers an edge.

FREELANCING AS A DESKTOP PUBLISHER
People often ask us to suggest an easily-understood freelance business that can be done from home. Desktop publishing -- using your computer and design software such as Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Publisher to create brochures, newsletters, flyers, books, etc., for small businesses and independent professionals -- is one such niche.

For some pointers on getting started in DTP, we turned to expert Evy Williams, of Brochures by Design (http://www.brochuresbydesign.com).

Evy, who has been in business for nearly five years (you’ll find samples of her work here), first cautions that “[r]unning a successful business requires a lot of hard work, tenacity and initiative and starting a desktop publishing business is no exception.”

Here are some books she recommends for further reading, followed by her 10 tips for moving downfield:

1. Be a lifelong learner. Always continue to learn new things. The more skills you can offer a client, the more important you are to them.

2. Network with anyone and everyone. Join local and virtual organizations to meet the people in the industry. If you’re known in the industry for a specialty like desktop publishing, when someone needs to refer a client in your area of specialization, they’ll think of you.

3. Keep your skills updated. Technology is changing all the time; keep up with it. For example, if you’re an expert in Quark Xpress you should not only learn the latest version of that program but you should also know that Adobe’s InDesign is now the standard layout program for many businesses.

4. Market yourself, market your business, and just keep marketing. Keep current on the latest marketing trends so that you will be on par with your competition. Marketing is one of the most important factors in a successful business and especially one that is “virtual.” Because we don’t have a sign outside our home advertising our business for us, you need to get the word out as much as possible.

5. If you don’t already have superior customer service skills, develop them. This is critical for a business, especially a service-oriented business. You can’t keep a client without it. I would recommend periodically surveying your clients to see how you’re doing. You could ask them for a recommendation/testimonial and this feedback will be enlightening. You also benefit by posting those testimonials on your website for potential clients to see.

6. Volunteer your time and your skills. Volunteering isn’t completely altruistic; not only do you get a sense of satisfaction but you can also acquire new skills, build a network, etc.

7. Develop a strong work ethic. Starting a business from scratch requires a lot of hours to build a network of clients, partners, referrals, etc. Most of the hours you put in at the beginning will be unpaid; they’ll be for marketing and getting your name out there. The money will come later.

8. Be creative. Not only will you want to be creative in your desktop publishing design work but also in your marketing efforts and other aspects of your business. Look for opportunities that might otherwise go unnoticed. For instance, when leaders in the industry ask for your input, provide it. You’ll get noticed by them and by others and possibly end up being considered an expert in that area.

9. Acquire good communication skills. Good communication means listening well as much as it means speaking well. This will be an invaluable skill along the way when clients know that you heard and understood what they wanted. Be sure to clarify with the client that you understand what they are asking for.

10. Get organized. Organization will be extremely important in order for you to deliver a quality service in a timely manner.

A NEW SECTION – “FRUGAL AND SIMPLE LIVING”
Many of us have just weathered another stupefying December advertising hurricane, as we emerge from the holidays on a slippery field of credit card receipts. So Chris and I thought it might be a good time to introduce an antidotal Bulletin section, “Frugal and Simple Living.”

Here, we’ll focus on ways you can save money, have other options besides more credit card debt, and live a simpler life.

FROM THE R3 MAILBAG -- QUESTIONS ABOUT WORKING FROM HOME, AND OTHER RAT RACE TOPICS

DEAR R3: I would like to do website design projects from home from time to time, to earn extra money, but I don’t want to have a full-blown “business.” Is this possible?

R3: Yes. Don’t let the terminology deter you. “Business” at bottom simply means independent money-making activity. Most freelance service providers -- which is what you would be -- work part-time, on a project or contract basis, without the trappings of larger businesses (business plan, board of directors, incorporation with multiple shareholders, etc.).

That said, you’ll still need to follow basic business principles, i.e., earn enough money to cover costs and leave you your target income; have a marketing plan, if only an outline, and know how you’ll keep projects coming; decide on your best “legal entity” (sole proprietorship, limited liability company, etc.); pay attention to tax considerations; and so on.

HOME-BASED CALL CENTER REPS CAN BE FREELANCERS OR EMPLOYEES
Depending on which virtual call center you work for here in the US, you could be a “regular employee” (West, for example, as of last November), an independent contractor / freelancer (LiveOps; certain VIPdesk positions), or the employee of your own micro-company, which has the call center as a customer (Arise).

It sounds more complicated than it is, but it’s also important to keep in mind, as there’s a significant financial difference (including taxes) between employee and independent contractor status.

For more on which call center companies treat you which way (and how much they’re paying), see our call center chart at http://www.ratracerebellion.com/CS_Comparison.html.

For more on how the IRS defines “employee” and “independent contractor,” and the tax differences, see

HOME-BASED WORKERS GATHER OFFLINE AT “JELLY” AND “COWORKER” SPOTS
As many of us know from experience, no working situation is perfect, and working from home is no exception. People are social animals, and we get lonesome for our fellow bipeds!

What to do? Well, in the old days, you could walk to the general store, buy a soft drink or an ice cream cone, and while away a few minutes catching up on the town gossip. Nowadays, you can drive to a café and meet other home-workers, but more organized options are opening up too, like “coworker spaces” and “Jelly.”

Coworker spaces are places you can rent by the month or day to hang out with fellow “homies.” A recent Fortune Small Business article says there are currently about three dozen such places worldwide, but monthly fees can be high ($475 at Office Nomads in Seattle, Wash., for example, though the price does include permanent desk space, unlimited printing, Wi-Fi, 24-hr. access and the use of three conference rooms). A “day pass” ($20) seems like a better deal, at least for basic schmoozing.

Jelly takes a different approach, helping people organize freelancer or telecommuter get-togethers at homes, cafes, eateries, etc. A Jelly page for Tampa Bay, Fla., gives a sense of the vibe:

“Work at home? Feeling lonely? Come to a Tampa Bay Jelly, an every-so-often casual coworking session. We provide the chairs and the WiFi, you bring your laptop / work materials and sociability. All are welcome.”

I haven’t tried a Jelly yet, but it does sound like fun, and it certainly answers a growing need. For more, see http://workatjelly.com.

2008 -- THE YEAR OF THE RAT
I was driving (well, idling) on the Beltway here in Northern Virginia the other day, and all across the lanes, people were getting out of their cars and dancing on the roofs and hoods. “Why the celebration?” I asked.

“The Year of the Rat is here!” they shouted. “In the Chinese zodiac calendar!”

What can we expect in the Year of the Rat? Well, it’s supposed to be a great year for business, and an easy time to succeed, and to get rich, too.

What a coincidence. Sounds like a typical work-at-home job ad!
