Extra-Cash Gigs – Target-Owned Shipt Hiring Grocery Shoppers
Shipt is another “get paid to shop for groceries” gig, much like Instacart. Owned by Target, Shipt pays people to shop for groceries and deliver them locally in their own car. Set your own schedule.
“Experienced shoppers make an average of $16-$22/hr.,” Shipt says. “With tips you can potentially make more.” However, many Shipt shoppers say their hourly rate is below the quoted average, and “everything depends on tips.” Apart from tips, shoppers also say it helps to live in an upscale area, where food prices are higher. Bottom line, “your mileage may vary.” Pay is weekly. (If you don’t feel like doing the shopping and just want to deliver food, UberEats is hiring people for local restaurant deliveries. Any car will do.)
Also, when you’re calculating pay, don’t forget the other variables. Weather and traffic can slow you down. Gas and car costs count, too, though you can apparently use your own store gas card — if the store where you’re shopping offers them — for customer orders and get reduced gas prices.
What’s the Deal?
Companies like Shipt, Instacart, UberEats, Amazon Flex, Postmates (also hiring non-pro drivers), and others fill a growing demand. More and more people are time-starved — or they can’t get out to shop — and others are simply getting used to ordering things for home delivery. With companies like Shipt, you get paid to buy and drop off the goods. With others there’s no shopping, just delivery, as with Amazon Flex and UberEats.
Shipt is also attractive to many because it offers unlimited deliveries for $99/yr.
Requirements
In Shipt’s words:
- At least 18 years of age.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license and auto insurance.
- A reliable vehicle, 1997 or newer.
- Knowledge of produce selection.
- Insulated cooler bags.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
- iPhone (iOS 10 or newer) or Android (5.1 or newer) smartphone.
Hiring Locations
To check if Shipt is in your area, go to shipt.com, scroll down to the bottom of the page to “Ready to become a member?” and enter your zip code in the box. (If your location isn’t included, be sure to check UberEats, Instacart, Amazon Flex and Postmates for more options.)
Some Shipters have done over 20 shops per day, per this Shipt video, which is serious cash – and serious shopping! But you don’t have to shop that often; it’s up to you.
